My latest FearZone column is up, here (http://www.fearzone.com/blog/cool-hell); fans of both Richard Matheson and Shirley Jackson can, hopefully, apply. Enjoy!
Excellent! And do check out the movie adaptation, too; Roddy MacDowell's Fischer was a huge influence on Carraclough Devize, as well as being first in a long line of characters played by gay actors I found myself distractedly yearning after. (See also: Most people played by Ian McKellen, Anthony Perkins.)

I have an incredible fondness for Roddy McDowall despite the fact that I've never seen him any substantial adult roles; I know him mostly as a child and bit character actor and if you know where to find his film Tam-Lin, I will light candles to you.
Excellent! The movie is actually a fairly faithful translation, although A) not as porny and B) far more English. They also changed the character of Florence so that she's less a red-headed sexpot with religious delusions than a very well-meaning, VERY young woman of whom Barrett says: "But she's only a child!"
