...as started by
lonesome_crow. Funnily enough, I had actually tried to figure a similar list out for myself some time back, but seem to have since lost it. So, in roughly descending chronological order:
"Mrs Gertrude", as collected by the Brothers Grimm
"Berenice," Edgar A. Poe
"The Room in the Tower", E.F. Benson
"Lost Hearts", M.R. James
"Amore Dure", Vernon Lee
"The White People", Arthur Machen
"Pickman's Model", H.P. Lovecraft
"The Repairer of Reputations", Robert W. Chambers
"The Beast With Five Fingers", William Fryer Harvey
"With and Without Buttons", Mary Butts
"On No Account, My Love," Elizabeth Jenkins
"Drink My Blood", Richard Matheson
"Shambleau", C.L. Moore
"The Screwfly Solution", Alice B. Sheldon/James Tiptree Jnr.
"Sometimes They Come Back", Stephen King
"Dark Angel", Edward Bryant
"Red As Blood", Tanith Lee
"In the Hills, the Cities", Clive Barker
"Daughter of the Golden West," Dennis Etchison
"Mark Ingestre: The Customer's Tale", Robert Aickman
"The Children of the Kingdom", T.E.D. Klein
"The Road of Pins", Caitlin R. Kiernan
"A Street Was Chosen", Ramsey Campbell
"White Chapel", Douglas Clegg
Revised to add, in no order:
"The New Mother", Lucy Lane Clifford
"The Small Assassin", Ray Bradbury
"The Cold Equations", Tom Goodwin
"The Country of the Kind", Damon Knight
"The Whimper of Whipped Dogs", Harlan Ellison
"The New Daughter", John Connolly
(I've since realized that I actually carried over a couple of other people's choices. But I'd never read "Screwfly" before
jodylinn recommended it, and it's great; "Pickman's Model" remains just plain made of awesome, meanwhile, so yah boo sucks. Besides, is there really any better Machen short story--and "The Great God Pan" is a novella, so it doesn't count--than "The White People"? T.E.D. Klein sure doesn't think so.;))
Meanwhile, my place is still the house of sick and shit, in pretty much that order; this was a nice distraction. Steve has it now, so I guess Cal won't be far behind. But today went okay otherwise, and tonight I'm going to take enough Nytol to knock out a horse. We'll see how that goes.
