Birthday haul: A Mexican ring and necklace from Mom, to go with the scarf, wallet and Frida Kahlo pen she already gave me, plus Miracles: The Complete Series, Hellboy: Sword of Storms and Children of Men from Steve. Yay! I've been catching up with those non-archived episodes all day, along with stuff I'd already read through on-line...Maggie Grace turned out to be in one episode, as an Amish girl bodysharing with a snooty NY suicide who bore more than a little resemblance to Shannon, her character on Lost. Typecast at, what, 22? Interesting...

Tomorrow, for our anniversary, Steve and I will catch Grindhouse, then take Cal to church for the Stations of the Cross. Won't be Mel Gibson-level in terms of gore, I'm sure--and by that I mean Grindhouse, naturally.;) But it'll be nice to actually get out for a while, especially to do something other than go to BodyCombat.

The new outline for Nobody is ticking along fairly well, and I'm getting a shape for the Lilim demonstration-model first chapter, too. Naturally, I could have worked harder last night, but instead I chose to just go to my own birthday dinner and then watch Marie Antoinette and Curse of the Golden Flower, which A) were weirdly similar in terms of decor, ritual and fashion and B) didn't suck, either. What is it with some people? Aside from the fact that Flower's main theme is fairly unpalatable to the Western mind (ie: don't matter if he's a total bastard, you CANNOT KILL THE EMPEROR. Or your Dad. Or your Dad, the Emperor), I thought it played somewhat like an Asian version of The Lion in Winter--Prince Yu's last lines, in particular, were pure King-to-be John(ny). I could sort of see what annoyed critics about Kristen Dunst's opaque performance as M.A., what with her tense, ironic little smile and her general stupid/insulated goodwill towards all, but...uh, that's fairly accurate. According to Antonia Frasier's book, at any rate.

Oh, and finally: Two things I didn't say about my WHC experience, because I am an easily-tired knob. First off, I had a wonderful time sitting next to [livejournal.com profile] sarahlangan, whose boyfriend turns out to be Soft For Digging/Mimic 3 auteur J.T. Petty, at the mass autograph signing--would have liked to continue the conversation later on, but I got shy and drunk, so there you go. And much to my surprise, Ellen Datlow spent part of the same two-hour melee taking the time to come over and tell me she liked what I'd been doing lately, which meant...a whole, big lot, considering that even after however many years it's been, I remain just a tiny bit amazed she even remembers my name. One day, I swear I'll write something she wants for when she wants it, and my professional life will finally be complete.;)

And now, I must get off Steve's fastfastfast computer, returning to my own snail-machine for genuine work. See yez.

You've heard me arguing enough times with Jen over Dunst's brilliant, risking-unlikeability performance as Mary Jane to know that yeah, she'd be a good choice to play Marie Antoinette.
