Cal is currently running around the apartment pulling books off the shelves and keeping up a constant chorus to himself of: "One, two, three, four, five...one, two, three, four, five..." Sometimes he skips "four", sometimes he throws in a "nine". It's makin' me proud and drivin' me spare, in equal measures.

Heard back from BFI, in record time. Unfortunately, somebody's already doing Goodfellas, and my contact thinks they'll do Raging Bull either next, or long before they do Gangs. So I've already thanked her and asked if I can pitch some Canadian titles; Maddin's Tales from the Gimli Hospital comes to mind, mainly because the British like Maddin (for a long time, one could only find his works as imports/on PAL). And he's a pretty damn easy interview, too, as I recall...though I think I'd have to distinguish myself from, say, Caelum Vatnsdal--the last guy to do a Maddin book--by not simply accepting everything Maddin says as the unvarnished truth. Research and second opinions, that's my creed.;)

Anyhow, dinner's on. More later.

Yay for Cal and numbers, and try try again with the BFI. I am sorry someone's already writing about him, but Maddin needs to be done (I'm guessing they have not too many Canadian directors represented...)

None, that I've seen thus far--which is pretty funny, considering how (naturally) spoken-English-centric their picks tend to be. As for Mr Vatnsdal, his book Kino Delirium is the only book thus far to cover Maddin's films aside from A) the dude who wrote Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes, for whom Tales is a brief anecdote about how he made accidental money from a bunch of crazy Winnipeggers, and B) all the stuff Maddin's written himself. And since, as I said, Vatnsdal tends to think just quoting Maddin on anything/everything is the be-all and end-all, Maddin might as well have written KD too.;)
