(Girl) Decide
Sep. 6th, 2012 10:12 amStill struggling to choose between writing about Yellowbrickroad or the gialli of Pupi Avati for ChiZine.com, mainly because my copy of The House with Laughing Windows finally came yesterday, which makes me want to re-watch Zeder and wax fulsome about how pastoral, bleak and odd his few forays into the genre are. (I also discovered that you can watch sections of The Arcane Enchanter on YouTube, which doesn't help.
Meanwhile, my progress on "Scarlet Town" has slowed below a crawl. I did a truly pathetic 421 words two days ago, though certainly, every time I look through it I discover problems that I then trim or fix. So it's getting better, and definitely moving forward, but I still sort of feel as though I'm letting myself down. I need to get in the groove.
Arrrrrgh.
Otherwise, I've been having a lot of fun listening to the soundtrack Nick Cave and Warren Ellis put together for John Hillcoat's Lawless, which famously involves a lot of roots rock covers done in classic roadhouse style--almost traditional, except for the slide guitar and the fuzz. Hearing Ralph Stanley sing "White Light/White Heat" is very odd indeed, but it grows on you. I'm also impressed by contributions from Emmylou Harris and Mark Lanegan, who perform with "the Bootleggers", a band made up for the project. Here's my two favourites: "Fire & Brimstone", followed by "Fire in the Blood/Snake Song"
They make me think ill thoughts about tommy-guns and moonshine, which I guess is the point. Though they also make me want a mostly-genderswapped version in which three backwoods sisters become accidental 'shine magnates, only to whap up against a former moll who's taken over her ex's business and a Prohi agent so odd he takes a fetishistic interest in seeing who'll kill who first. Maybe with some holler magic added, too...one of A-Cat's ancestors bolstering the sisters out of sheer chaos-love, and eventually bringing at least one of them back from the dead to do swampy vengeance on not-Guy Pearce. Yet one more thing I have no time for.;)
Ah, well. Back to the column.

I hope you can find the spark to get back into those languishing stories. Does re-reading portions of the last bit of writing help?
