Literally the Last Day of August
Aug. 31st, 2012 02:22 pm...and this is the first legitimate entry I've made since we left for the Island, almost two weeks ago. Sorry about that.
The trip was great but crazy, followed by an equally crazy-making after-deluge of various appointments (the first part of Cal's post-Surrey Place psychological assessment, for example) and various trips...yesterday we spent the afternoon at my in-laws', and today we're (hopefully) hooking up with Steve's friend Peter, his wife and his son to hit the Canadian National Exhibition. Last minute, like always. We'll see.
Tuesday, Cal goes back to school, and I may be able to reassemble some sort of functional work-schedule. I don't think I've written anything over the last week or so except this article about Catilin R. Kiernan's amazing science fiction (http://www.chizine.com/shock_and_awe_caitlin_kiernan.htm), which appears to be in the process of getting coded. I remember making some vague notes on "Scarlet Town" when I was on the Island, but it's all a bit of a blur of sunscreen, wasps and walking--two kilometres either way to get to where you could rent a quadricycle, on Centre Island, vs. where we were staying, which was on Algonquin Island, next to Ward's. "The Island" is a conglomerate, you see, connected by a series of foot-bridges. But Cal loved Lake Ontario and actually paid attention to so many unfamiliar things it amazed me. He's never been anyplace that "natural", which is a bit of an oxymoron, since the Island is perhaps the most stringently managed habitat you'll see in and around the GTA.
Okay, back to waiting for Peter's call and dealing with Cal's restlessness. Enjoy the article. I'll be back later to talk about various things I saw over this period, including an extremely odd film called Yellowbrickroad.
