Women in Hollywood, rightly annoyed by the almost total lack of inclusion for female filmmakers on Sight & Sound's list of “The Greatest Films of All Time”, has compiled a list of directors and films which might/should've made the cut aside from Chantal Ackerman (for Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles). I agree with a lot of these, though I might personally have chosen other representative titles for some people, and have added those in brackets.
Allison Anders - Gas, Food, Lodging
(Alison Anders – Mi Vida Loca)
Gillian Armstrong - My Brilliant Career
Gillian Armstrong - High Tide
Andrea Arnold - Fish Tank
Dorothy Arzner - Dance, Girl, Dance

(Kathryn Bigelow - Near Dark)
(Kathryn Bigelow – Strange Days)
Antonia Bird - Priest
(Antonia Bird - Ravenous)
Catherine Breillat - Fat Girl
Jane Campion - The Piano
Jane Campion - Sweetie
Niki Caro- Whale Rider
Lisa Cholodenko - The Kids Are All Right (High Art)
Sofia Coppola - Lost in Translation (The Virgin Suicides)
Claire Denis - 35 Shots of Rum (Trouble Every Day)
Marleen Gorris - Antonia's Line
Debra Granik- Winter's Bone
Randa Haines - Children of a Lesser God
Mary Harron - American Psycho
Amy Heckerling - Clueless
Amy Heckerling - Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Agnieszka Holland - Europa, Europa
Nicole Holofcener - Walking and Talking
Courtney Hunt - Frozen River
Annamarie Jacir - Salt of the Sea
Patty Jenkins - Monster
Miranda July - Me and You an Everyone We Know
Kasi Lemmons- Eve's Bayou
Barbara Loden - Wanda

Elaine May - The Heartbreak Kid
Deepa Mehta – Water
(Deepa Mehta - Fire)
Mira Nair - Monsoon Wedding
Kimberly Peirce- Boys Don't Cry
Sarah Polley - Away From Her
Sally Potter - Orlando
Lynne Ramsay - We Need to Talk About Kevin

Kelly Reichardt- Meek's Cutoff
Celine Sciamma - Tomboy
Joan Micklin Silver - Hester Street
Barbra Streisand - Yentl
Julie Taymor – Frida
(Julie Taymor - The Tempest)
Agnes Varda - Cleo from 5 to 7
Agnes Varda – Vagabond
(Agnes Varda – The Gleaners and I)
Lina Wertmuller - Seven Beauties
Lina Wertmuller - Swept Away
I'd also add Moufida Tlati's The Silences of the Palace and Samira Makmalbaf's At Five in the Afternoon, possibly Joyce Chopra's Smooth Talk, Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust, Ruba Nadda's Cairo Time, Euzhan Palcy's Sugar Cane Alley...I'd love to see more unabashedly spectacular and visionary directors on the list, though Ramsay, Taymor, Mehta and Bigelow certainly do their best. Karyn Kusama also deserves a place on the list for Girlfight, even though I know people would fight me on Jennifer's Body. Rose Troche's Go Fish should also be on there somewhere, not least for its impact on the U.S. indie scene of the early 1990s.
Anyone else have some films and directors to add?
