Canada Day

Used to be, either Showcase, Bravo or CBC original flava could be counted on to have a full day of Canadian movies scheduled, but not this year. Maybe I'm behind the times on this one; quite probably so. Bravo at least has a full day of Canadian programming, though it's all stuff like Raising a Haida Totem Pole and Dark Pines: The Disappearance of Tom Thompson. Oh, and Guy Maddin's The Saddest Music in the World, because that's apparently the only English-language film ever made ever in recent years; then again, this is the same station which seems to be perpetually showing Brand Upon the Brain! at 2:00 in any given morning, so maybe it's more to do with Maddin films being really cheap to license.

In other "news", The Last Airbender movie officially sucks, which should surprise no one. People are also taking this as a fine opportunity to shit both on M. Night Shyamalan's recent decisions (indeed rather stupid) and, retroactively, on his entire body of work, which doesn't surprise me. Too bad, in both directions.

Meanwhile: Steve has to go in to work for a few hours, and I have to take Cal to his music lessons. No stores are open, which cuts down our options otherwise. I'm thinking probably a trip to the park and some time in the wading-pool, so will pack accordingly.

I was amused by the fact that Roger Ebert of all people came across as something of an Avatar fanboy in his scathing indictment of the live action suckfest, repeatedly talking about how the film fails on pretty much every level that the series succeeded on. I mean, I knew going in that it was going to be godawful, but I was expecting the typical "I don't care about the source material because it is irrelevant" stance I've become accustomed to seeing from critics.

What I'm getting out of most of this is that I should probably rent and/or buy and watch the original. Which is pretty much what I already thought, but hey, Night, if you really want to spent $200 million to convince me of it...

Yeah, I'd love that, actually! I found the first three ep.s of "Water" on Youtube and watched them, and had to stop before I mainlined it all down. It's fantastic--not just because of the design and the characters, but also because it has that classic HK mix of kick-ass fighting and true goofiness. Also, the first two ep.s I watched were slightly sped up, which made things even funnier.
