So: Now it can be told--"The Shrines" is going to Michael Kelly's Chilling Tales, a brand-new (and hopefully yearly) anthology of Canadian horror from EDGE, also responsible for EVolVe. I'm sharing the TOC with lots of people I highly admire, so that's great. And money is starting to come in, too; just got an address query from Shroud magazine, who wanted to know where to send my pending check and contributor's copy for "The Underneath". That'll rock.

Otherwise, still far more thinking than writing, which needs to stop. Yesterday was my Mom's birthday, which meant most of today was spent giving her what little I could--getting Steve to take her on lines, cooking her dinner, etc. Cal began the day completely crazy, yet ended it in an oddly mellow, affectionate, responsive place. We watched an episode of The Littlest Hobo that Mom had accidentally PVRed, only to discover it starred her, Megan Followes, Neil Daynard and Louis del Grande, amongst others. "A cornucopia of bad acting," she called it; pretty bad, yeah. The faux-Bronx accent and the unblended wedges of rouge on her cheek-apples certainly didn't help.

And WOW, that show was badly-made. I mean...yeah, I get that it was shot on video, and all, but...just awful. Everything vaguely out of focus, plus the fact that I can never forget how Mom told me there were actually six or so different "Hobo" dogs, each fulfilling a different function, and the trainer was always just offscreen screaming instructions at them, which were later covered over with ADR and music: "So-and-so! ACT! So-and-so! JUMP! GOOD dog! GOOOD dog!"

Anyhow. I'm tired, and my back hurts. Hopefully things will look better tomorrow.

It's a great TOC, and Mike's a great editor. Here's hoping this one sells well.

I was gonna hold onto this for next Sunday's YouTubery in my LJ, but since you mentioned The Littlest Hobo, I figure I can't fight the synchronicity: this mashup is very wrong and entirely hilarious. My childhood, my childhood, wail moan gnash etc.

*g*

(Coolness on the writing/publication front, too!)

Oh my LORD, that's odd. Particularly so because the original Lily Allen video must have been so odd to begin with. Thanks.;)

Yeah, my Mom played trashy GFs on at least two Hobo episodes, so she's hoping she'll manage to PVR the other one soon. Typecasting?

Yay! That's very good news. Hope your back gets better, though.

I've been hoping that for a while now; seems unlikely, unless we get another mattress. But thanks.

What might help is a mattress pad. My sister bought one made out of memory foam at Zellers and it helped her back enormously. She'd ended up in the hospital in the winter from a pulled muscle. I forget how much the pad was, but I think both you and your husband will find it worth every penny.

Zellers is weirdly hard to get to, when you live in downtown Toronto. I'll take it under advisement.

Everything vaguely out of focus

The frustrating thing is that when I watch Canadian tv of that era, the filming is always that bad - even when everything else is good I can't stand to watch - the lighting makes it look set-bound even when it was filmed on location. It's especially annoying when I can see that everyone else was doing a good job, it's a period piece and the costume designer probably went to a lot of work, etc - and the damn lighting and camera makes it all look flat and cheap.

No, I totally understand, and agree. I remember us both saying this about those CBC mysteries Douglas Campbell was in; God knows, I think it even about Road to Avonlea, and that was comparably recent!
