And This Really Is It

Okay: Today's appointment was actually just the pre-op battery of tests (blood, ECG, medical history, etc.). The operation itself is still tomorrow--I go in to the hospital at 10:30 AM, into the operating room at 12:30, and stay overnight. If all goes well, they release me on Wednesday. And then...the rest of my life.

Apparently, I'm quite ridiculously healthy, which is good. I did have one moment of superlative memory fail, in which I neglected to tell them I'm a celiac because I just never think of that as "a chronic disease"; I didn't suddenly contract it, after all. It's neither curable nor fatal. But we got that straightened out, eventually, and I was moved into the next phase.

Since then, it's been the usual battery of dealing with Cal--he really doesn't want to go to bed these days, tending to spend a traumatic half-hour afterwards shrieking and weeping like we just stuck him with pins, and the main things he does want to do are watch the first fifteen minutes of Nightmare Before Christmas and the Discovery Channel "The World is Just Awesome" over and over, obsessively. I don't hate either, but they're starting to wear.

Otherwise: Trying to keep calm. Packed a bag. Can't eat or drink anything after midnight tonight.

I'll see you all in about a week.

P.S.: Fascinating essay about Bill Cosby's character on I Spy, who turns out to have been political, smart, bad-ass and ummmph all at once, here (http://community.livejournal.com/choc_fic/125428.html); my favorite part is a quote from the essayist's friend: "Yes, I know you're traumatized that the man who sold you pudding when you were a child was that hot. Deal." My least favorite part is where somebody else points out that this was over thirty years ago, and there's not one damn mainstream show on right now which treats race in the same thoughtful, provoking way.

P.S.: Direct link not working, for some reason. Try this (http://dorinda.livejournal.com/4137.html).
