Words added: 776. Chapter Twelve overall: 7,776, weirdly. But big sections of that are going to be scaled back soon enough, because they're just notes and research, not the actual forward motion we need so badly. And that is coming, yes indeed. Coming, like October.;)

How-eva. Going to stop now, because I've at least made quota, and I need to get my crap together to pick up Cal. Tonight is going to be interesting--BodyCombat, straight over to sign some sheets and see Sandra, then back to catch up on the SYTYCD Canada version of Hollywood week. I need to get Steve up to speed.

In other news, Jane Lindskjold's Thirteen Orphans makes 146 books read this year. Unfortunately, it's A) the start of a trilogy and B) perhaps the most boringly written book I've read for some time. Not BAD, just boring. I keep resisting the urge to cut almost everything in various paragraphs--not because I dislike the characters (I don't) or am disinterested by the plot (though it does move damn slowly), but because her transitions and dialogue are unbelievably leaden. Or...not unbelievably, sadly; very accurate-to-life-ly. Which ain't what I turn to fiction for, really.

Still: Taught me a lot about mah-jongg imagery, which I suppose is potentially useful. So--score?

Sorry to introduce myself in this way. I found your journal through threetentrain and have read some of your work. With the whole Thirteen Orphans book, I think one of the worst things that can happen is when an author gets a very good idea but can't write it that well or writes it how you described. It's very frustrating because you donb't know whether to toss the book or just keep going and hoping you see light.
Off subject, I recently (read, three days ago) read 'Sown From Salt'. You mentioned you were writing a sequel 'A Feast For Dust'. Has it ever been published? I'd love to read it.

Neither finished nor published, unfortunately--like most of the short fiction I have on the bubble, I've put it off until I'm done with A Book of Tongues, which needs to be brought in about halfway through October. That said, I know what happens in "Dust", and I've got maybe 2,000 words' worth of notes. My hope is that if I can cut a deal for a third collection of short stories with a publisher somewhere, it'd be one of the new stories written specifically for that TOC.

Anyhow...nice to meet you! Hope you don't feel like you've come in right at what seems like the tail-end of the 3:10 fandom--we could certainly use some new blood.

Reese and Bart, for the win! I do love how they are very much not Rook and Chess, and not really even Charlie and Ben...the same archetypes, maybe, but not the same guys.
