Mark A. Clements' The Children of the End, finished today, takes me to almost twenty books read in 2009--pretty good (or bad, depending), for the end of January. As probably noted in an earlier post, my Mom ragged me out for the amount of books I read last year, since she thought it must be interfering with my ability to write; obviously, not such a problem so far, this year. I also reserve the right to drop books if I find them untenable, which helps: Bye-bye, Melusine by Sarah Monette and Michael Crichton's Sphere! I have bigger and better things to do with my life.

Last night, meanwhile, we watched Repo! The Genetic Opera, which at least proves that Darren Lynn Bousman has slightly more interesting tastes than the last...four?...Saw movies would tend to indicate; it's not perfect, but it has a crazy energy and some of the numbers are really catchy. People have been complaining that it was overtly designed as an "instant cult movie", and yes, this is a drawback--the script is maybe a good second draft at best, padded out with costume design and spectacle. Nevertheless, Anthony Stewart Head turns in a whackily good performance, and everybody else rises halfway to meet him, be they Sarah Brightman with her holograph-casting fake eyes, Alexa Vega punking out to a vision of Joan Jett, or Bill Moseley, Ogre and Paris Hilton as Paul Sorvino's "disappointing" trio of sociopath kids. Best of all in the subsidiary cast is the guy who plays the Graverobber, half cabaret emcee/narrator, half roving plot twist; only makes sense he's one of the screenwriters.;)

Last night's final word-count = 1,675. I'm creeping up on 20,000 words overall, and have a pretty good lock on the rest of Chapter Four. So now that my back has finally unkinked--I slept jack-knifed, and woke up in agony--I'm going to have a shower, and get back to it.

P.S.: Apparently, a lot of people are already dropping out of Lie To Me because they say it's repetitive and predictable...just like The Mentalist. For me, it's about the choice of actors, so I'll choose Tim Roth over Happy Fluffy Pseudo-Twink Aussie Guy any damn day; I also find the dynamics hella less annoying, in general. Too bad I'm so far behind on Lost, though--that's one I'll have to catch up with all at once on DVD, at this point.
