Can't Sleep, My Back Will Eat Me

This is the third or fourth day I've woken up feeling like somebody kicked me between the shoulders and in the lumbar region, repeatedly, while I was asleep; I actually decided not to go to BodyFlow because of it, though I'd been looking forward to that all yesterday evening. So, you know? I think it's time to flip the mattress. And I won't take "no" for a damn answer.

Other stuff:

1) Went to see Miami Vice last night. The good part is that it's a fairly perfect transposition and update of the original premise, with all the sex and violence that network TV wouldn't allow back in the day. I have no problem with Gong Li's broken English (and Spanish), since Vice takes place in a proudly pidgin world; hell, I even have no problem with Colin Farrell's acting, which is...surprising. But the bad part is that it's so faithful to the original that it essentially functions as a two-hour, very expensive TV series pilot, except with no series to follow--it sets up the situation, millieu and characters, then leaves us knowing nothing will come of any of it. There won't be any further complications or character development, Isabella won't reappear at the midpoint toting Sonny's baby, the season cliffhanger won't involve Montoya suddenly popping up in Dahrain and them cutting a deal with the army/CIA/Black Ops to go get him, or whatever. It just it what it is: Miami Vice Redux.

2) Am currently at two out of twelve re the Rue Morgue capsule book reviews, and deep into the process of refining my pitch(es) for Monday, when I approach Leisure Books. I've also finally outlined what's really going on in "Niemand" (to be referred from now on as "Nobody", in order to be less obscure and more potentially salable), and am rejiggering the parts of it that I've already written to fit. Got email from a bunch of different important people offering possibile markets/ opportunities: Man, it's good to be thought of again. Etc.

3) Yesterday I surprised myself by adapting a recipe I had on hand for something called "Imam Bayildi", thus allowing us to cook an eggplant moping around in the fridge before it officially went off. Turned out fairly well, though I had only one tomato and thus had to add pasta sauce, plus using mushrooms and arugula instead of parsley, plus having to concoct fake "allspice" by mixing ginger, cinnamon and sugar together. I've dubbed the revised dish "Imam Bilby", after a small marsupial now used in Tasmania to replace the Easter Bunny.

4) I now get regular stock updates from the Eaton Centre lululemon Athletica store, which is how I recently found out that two of their more popular clothing colors are officially called "Mildew" and "Portapotie" (with an "ie"! Claaaaassy.;))

And...scene.
