Not counting re-reads, obviously. But with the inclusion of Basilica, this puts my official number of “books read” at 86, though some people may not think manga and graphic novels count (they’d be wrong). It also occurs to me that perhaps this explains why I haven’t been writing as much as I should, though losing my job, running a household and dealing with Cal may also factor in somewhat. A surprising amount of fiction, too…especially so in the case of von Daniken, who’s so much funnier than I remember him being when I was eleven. My two favorite parts are where he tries to convince us that the Egyptian gods were accurate renditions of half-human monstrosities spawned by bestiality, and that’s why the Bible throws in so many strictures against having sex with animals (‘cause that can happen, right? It’s sort of like ligers, except—far less likely, and far more demented), and where he admits at the very end of his introduction that he wrote most of this book while imprisoned “on remand in the Remand Prison of the canton of Graubunden in Chur.” For what, I wonder? (And did it involve animals?)
After yesterday’s Amazing Race, both Cal and I aren’t completely up to snuff—he has a phlegmy cough, and I’m tired beyond belief—so I’m keeping him home, aside from the inevitable 4:30 PM swimming lesson. These are going a bit better with each new visit; he usually starts out clinging to me like a limpet, possibly from cold more than anything else (the pool is heated, but he’s incredibly stringy), then relaxes a bit more after we fit him with a life-jacket and let him spash around. Last time, he pushed himself into the pool a few times in succession, loving the sound and spray of impact, and even went down a slide into the pool at least once. Still not eating well, annoyingly, but we’re getting the cod-liver oil into him, if nothing else. I really have to get onto making those GF muffins.
In news of writing, meanwhile, I finally transcribed all my notes for “Hell Friend”, bringing the current word-count up to 1,025—a respectable beginning. I’m still hunting down interview subjects for the Montage piece, and am not exactly sure when the deadline runs out, but I’m keeping my editor informed at all points on the curve. Still some unresolved issues from TFS, naturally enough; I was particularly amazed by the cheek of a guy who dropped out halfway through my TV scriptwriting class and turned in a grand total of one assignment, who’s now pulling the “I paid a lot of money to go here, so you should just pass me” card. As I replied to his imperious email, I no longer work there, which makes him no longer my problem; if it was such a big deal, then maybe he should have come to class/turned in his work consistently, which even people like that guy who could never be bothered to read what I wrote on the board at least managed to do. Hell, even his former partner, the Girl From Outer Space, managed to either do her work or pay somebody else to do it, by the end. It ain’t that hard, folks.
Okay, this has been nice, but I smell poo. Back later, maybe.

Huh. Here I always thought it had to do with nephilim.
That's what I get for trying to impose logic on both the bible and von Daniken...

Date: 2008-07-03 04:19 pm (UTC)Ohhhh, yes. And that--whatever the fuck Set is usually depicted as? Might be an aardvark, or an anteater? An echidna, maybe? Hot like burning. (Also, how did anger and/or evil get identified with an anteater, anyhow? How did the Egyptians even know about those animals? Because aliens showed them, of course!)
Yeah, I think a furries book by von Daniken is definitely the next (il)logical step. But isn't he dead?

Date: 2008-07-03 04:52 pm (UTC)Used to check out Chariots of the Gods form the school library whenever I needed a laugh.
Von Daniken actually set-up a Gods theme park several years back, it went bust after a few years.
