Almost through the last week of this semester, and pretty damn happy to be so. I haven't been good for much, otherwise. Luckily, this weekend is Ad Astra--I'll be reading sometime on Saturday, probably early in the morning, and doing a few panels as well; will try to post more specific details before Friday. Cal's been alternately chirpy and weepy, the latter possibly because I was home consistently, then wasn't anymore. His brave new trick is blurting: "What? What?!" all the time, almost reflexively...possibly this refers to me asking him (as I stupidly tend to, when he's melting down) "What?! What's wrong?" Not that he ever answers, obviously...

In other news, I'm back to noodling away at "Little Red Ants on a Hill"--yeah, I know I've said this before, but since I actually managed to finish one of Part 2's subsections last night, I'm further ahead than I was. And I'm also contemplating more Charlie/Jackson porn, basically so I can give Charlie the chance to lord it over someone else for once, Ben Wade-style; I may even juxtapose it with the Ben/Charlie porn I've already taken copious notes on, for maximum irony. As I was saying in response to a Charlie/Ben fanmix somebody posted over at threetentrain, it's just so nice to be part of an active fandom, for once; I mean, I know it'll slack off eventually, since it's A) a bottle universe in which B) most 'ships don't even work particularly well, since one or more of the participants is dead by the closing credits. But for now, it's pretty damn exciting.

Naturally, my sick love for Ben Foster in all his incarnations has already driven me to check out Nic Cassavetes' Alpha Dog, in which Ben plays a speed-jacking Jewish skinhead whose feud with a local suburban Hollywood drug-dealer ends up getting his little brother kidnapped (and killed--this isn't exactly a spoiler, since the whole film's explicitly based on a true story). The movie's pretty solid, from Foster on down: Justin Timberlake turns in a charismatically sensitive performance as the drug dealer's sidekick, while Emil Hirsch is amusingly ridiculous as the fake-hard drug dealer himself, a wannabe gangsta so short Ben towers above him (and constantly calls him "the midget" to his face). But for me, it's all about watching Ben's character, Jake Mazursky, put himself in increasingly crazy situations--whether it be counselling his brother on how to deal with his over-protective Mom (while drunk and high, with additional help from his hot, blonde, bespectacled Aryan girlfriend: "But she loooves you! You're her baaaby!"), trying to convince his telemarketing centre boss that he's not really back on speed ("Jake, so-and-so tells me you may be taking drugs again." "Whaaat? NOOO! I--I swear to fuckin' GOD, dude!"), breaking into Emil Hirsch's house with an axe and taking a shit on his rug, beating six guys up in quick succession at a party (and then screaming: "If you see Johnny Truelove, tell him Jake Mazursky is looking for him! THANK YOU!", before leaving), or letting Sharon Stone (as his stepmother, the little brother's Mom) slap him in the face until his nose starts to bleed (no, no--he essentially encouraged her to do that in real life. And believe me, it looks like it).

Much is made of Jake's own mother's role in how nuts he's turned out to be, though we never meet the woman onscreen. Going by his father's later choices, I assume she's probably some short, blonde, hot, insane shiksa--one also feels, by the end of the film, that Mr Mazursky Snr. must spend a fair amount of time wishing he'd just rented a storage locker and left Jake in there to raise himself while still paying child support, rather than agreed to Jake's Mom getting custody. (According to research I did on the real-life case, interestingly enough, the guy Jake's based on--also named Ben--has since gotten clean and sober, started a family of his own, and made up with his Dad/Step-mom. Says the latter: "It's weird that all this ended up bringing us closer, but eventually, even I had to admit that I missed him.")

Aaaanyways. I'm sure I'll be re-watching X3: The Last Stand any day now, though I think I'll avoid Hostage. Because there's only SO pathetic you can really let yourself become, even in the throes of fresh sexual obsession.;)

And now--bed.

Well, I still haven't seen 30 days, but that's because of a chronic lack of funds. As for X3, doesn't he just stand around being pretty, yet mostly silent through that one? I wish Bryan Singer had directed that movie.

Anyway, I made this - I have it on Insane Journal, but there's no room on LiveJournal. I thought maybe you'd like it.

Re X3, you are correct. He also sports the oddest-looking haircut I've ever seen (and that's including the haircut he has in Hostage, which is pretty friggin' weird). Would Singer's participation have helped? Hard to say--Warren Worthington III has never been an amazingly interesting character, aside from having wings, and all. Though at least Ben gives the vey real impression that he could beat the crap out of you with them, like a CGI swan.

As per the icon, meanwhile...thanks! More Stranger is always good Stranger.;)

Man, I LOVED Foster in Alpha Dog. Not entirely happy with the story, but his character (and surprisingly, Timberlake's) were very good. My favorite scene is "I NEED THIS FUCKING JOB!" And the others you mentioned. He's so amazing as Mazursky.

Have you seen Bang, Bang, You're Dead? It's worth a watch. Foster is very convincing as a desperate and bullied young man. His posture in this film impressed me the most. Total passive, beaten bearing.

I enjoyed him in Liberty Heights, too. Very cute if sad here and there. Plus, Adrien Brody, and that ain't bad. :D

I've never seen X3. I couldn't bring myself to watch X2! And I didn't know if I Foster's role was worth the effort.

While I'm at it, if you haven't and get the urge to watch Northfork, his role is minimal and he says NOTHING. A waste. The movie is almost interesting and there are some good performances, but for the most part I was dissatisfied.

Hey, definitely watch X2! I see it more as an extension of the first film, but I think I love it even more, in many ways...

Nope, haven't seen Bang Bang--actually hadn't even heard of it, before I started researching his filmography. And while I have seen Northfork, I totally forgot/didn't notice he was in it--was he one of the weird sort-of-angels hanging around with the kid who wasn't quite dead yet? Interesting. (One of the funnier side effects of liking Ben Foster seems to be constantly going: "Oh riiight, the complete freak in that movie that one time--that was HIM? Okay!")

As for Jake Mazursky, though...wow. I have so much inappropriate love for that guy, it's not even funny. And he's helping me a lot with not one but two original characters, so big shout-outs to Ben and Cassavetes (not to mention the poor people it's based on. Aside from Jesse James Hollywood, who really does seem to be a total scumbag).

I didn't even realize who Ben Foster was until 3:10 to Yuma. I saw Alpha Dog before that and yeah, he was pretty amazing in that despite the fact that I didn't really like the movie all that much. I seriously need to watch X3 again though.

Yes, write more "Little Red Ants on a Hill"! :D

I second that. Or did I third it? I'm confused.

Re-watched X3 on Friday, and while Ben-as-Warren really is barely in it, it did get me thinking; he's very far away from the original canonical comics version, who was a sunny, athletic, uber-privileged, ladies-lovin' rich-boy who just happened to have wings and angst if you scratched him. The weird part in the movieverse, however, is that in a way, the best sort of "evolution" for Warren would be to let him get comfortable enough to blossom into a person secure enough to show his flaws (whatever they might be), instead of being all pleasant and apologetic all the time (for fear they'll throw him out of the mansion). I had this flash of Piotr (Colossus) eventually drawing a picture much like the one he did in X2 of Bobby trying to kiss Rogue and getting zapped: Shirtless Warren in some offhand haughty-heroic pose, with a thought-bubble that says: Don't hate me because I'm beautiful, peons!

There's this picture of Foster as Angel at IMDB. It's a publicity picture. You would not recognize him. He looks like a - well - an angel. Blue eyed and pouty lipped, and serene.

I've never really liked the way they've handled canon in the X-Men movies. It's like they've selected only what suits them and thrown out the rest. Plus, you know, no Gambit. How can that be?!

Anyway, yes, that would be a great evolution for Warren and it does make sense in that light. Also, wonderful image. :)

Of course, I'm more of a DC person and up until Batman Begins they had really fucked that one up, so I really don't know why I expect anything better for Marvel. Alas.
