Now that you mention it, I don’t know how much of my own pattern-hunting tendencies are innate, and how much are due to the kinds of texts I’m drawn to, and whether there’s any real difference between those two explanations.
This afternoon I reread a bunch of AO3 comments and found one from a year or so back in which an author thanked me for being one of the few readers to spot the reference to Charn in her story and the only one to get the allusion to Dick van Dyke’s accent in Mary Poppins, and I began to wonder how many times when I think I’m being embarrassingly obvious, I’m actually totally failing to get the point across...
