The Count

Not sick anymore, finally (some small spasms of vertigo aside), though I'm definitely still tired. Last night I ended up watching Baraka to put myself to sleep, for the first time in months. Earlier in the day I'd finished "Night-Bird," then baked gluten-free muffins for Cal's "cultural foods lunch" today before going off to work out for two hours. I then watched all of The Bletchley Circle Season Two, which I highly enjoyed (Human-trafficking Maltese queenpin with a stolen Enigma machine! Lucy working in records at Scotland Yard! Susan finally breaching the secrets Act to tell her husband what she did during the War! ["Why are you in an Army car, Daddy?" "Because your mother's a bloody hero."]), only to find out it'd been officially cancelled by ITV. Fingers crossed for the same sort of resurrection Ripper Street got? Because damn, that was some fine, fine TV, right there. More smart women onscreen at one time than you see in a year, on most shows.

For those playing along at home, meanwhile, this brings my count for 2014 thus far to six short stories, a poem and a chunk of novel, to which I should now return. The stories are, as follows:

“That Place” (Letters to Lovecraft, Jesse Bullington ed.)
“Gaze” (The Doll Project, Ellen Datlow ed.)
“Guising” (October Dreams 2, Robert Morrish ed.)
“The Harrow” c. 2014 (Children of Old Leech, Justin Steele and Ross E. Lockhart ed.)
“This Is Not For You” [venue redacted]
“Night-Bird” (Aghast Magazine, George Cotronis ed.)

31,519 words of short fiction, plus 13,519 words of (new draft) novel, for 45,079 words overall. That's pretty good, as we move towards the end of April. But I definitely need to jack the novel-writing portion of my output up substantially, before the next round of potential anthology fills comes due.

Egh, anyhow. I feel like I haven't been doing much else, aside from maintenance as the usual day-to-day. My concert is coming up fast with choir, as is that trip to New York Mom and I are taking, so I'll keep you guys informed. And I really wanted to write about various movies I've seen, but...I'm tired, like I said. And I need a bath.

Back to it.
