Sunday Recs
Apr. 13th, 2014 05:29 pmMaybe because of the intensely variable air pressure shifts happening in Toronto right now (it pissed rain all night, then today went up to twenty degrees but tomorrow it might go down to two, etc.), I'm having a crappier time than I have for months with my shoulder, my joints. Constant pain and low-grade sinus headache. Therefore it's difficult to concentrate on much, so I've just been cleaning, organizing sections of the condo where dust and crap collect. A genuine review of Mike Flanagan's Oculus must therefore wait, sorry, because I can't put my thoughts in any sort of professional order.
That said, I have been reading some fanfic, which is surprising for me, these days. I almost think that reading constant meta about fanfic (particularly the many reasons why the things I like make me a nasty, horrible person) has put me off fanfic itself, just a bit. But sometimes you want stuff and sometimes fanfic is the only place to get it, and that's when tripping across pieces like the following can be helpful.
First up, in celebration of Steve having bought a BluRay of The Desolation of Smaug, have some Bitter Smithing. Before the events of The Hobbit, Thorin Oakenshield takes yet another annoying job working for humans who wouldn't know basic-level dwarf-type smithing if it bit them in the ass. By the end, he's founded a much-improved smithy, gathered/educated two apprentices, and gotten a fair amount of laid along the way: "The Apprentice", by eyebrow of doom, is the result (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1169655/chapters/2379772).
Over in True Detective-ville, however, there's a great necessity for...next exactly "fix-it" fic per se, but something that goes on after the show ends to explain how Rust and Marty probably will be horrible scarred but otherwise better than before, so long as they keep hold of each other. My favourite along those lines is this one, "What We've Got" by blackeyedblonde (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1353625/chapters/2825230). It doesn't quite end with the two of them becoming pet detectives or anything, but it's close.
"Naaaow, describe this puppy of yours to me, miss...in as much detail as possible. Uh huh. Well, you know, we may not be able t'find him...I mean, things sometimes don't turn out like you hope they will, that's just the unreliable nature of the universe..."
"Hey, you don't damn well tell little girls their puppies disappearin' is part of the inherent uselessness of human experience, Rust! God damn!"
"Look, I wasn't gonna say THAT, Marty. I'm not a maniac."
Finally, if Raul Esparza's crazily amusing reinterpretation of Dr Frederick Chilton in Hannibal has sown this particular seed in your mind, maybe you might be interested in some hot, terrifying and slightly sad Chilton/Hannibal slash, here: "Tessellate," by loghain (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1283845/chapters/2659945?view_adult=true). It's well worth your time, and it doesn't even end as badly for Chilton as the show did!
Okay, that's it. I'm going back to my lists and my make-work. All best.
