Today I took a bunch of my shorter stuff, good ideas with nothing attached, and shuffled them into a folder marked "Flash". The sort of things I'd develop for my own version of Sirenia Digest, I guess, did such a thing exist. It occurs to me that these are the kind of seeds I've actually been channelling into poetry recently, and that works too, to a point. But not everything is right for that sort of transition.

(I also, after spending some time the other day going: "So many people are writing YA! It's a huge market! Why couldn't you do that, Gemma? What are you, stupid?", tripped over what I can only think of as a pitch for a YA book--a Harry Potter-type variant in which the Hogwarts equivalent turns out the be a Scholomance. The back-of-the-book copy would boil down to: If somebody offers you something which seems far too good to be true, for free, because you're "special", then...maybe you need to look into that. I'm not sure if I meant it as a joke or what, but it certainly does look doable.)

And why am I going back through my files, exactly? Because I'm still blocked on "In Scarlet Town", naturally. Need to push the fuck through that, double-quick. Time is literally a-wastin'.

This morning I dropped Cal off at the first of two Summer Adventure camps, which is where he's going to be for this week and the next. Seemed pretty cool with it when I left him there, but I guess we'll see. Then I came home and did frankly almost nothing for much of the morning. I'm hoping to change that over the next couple of hours.

Otherwise: Finally got Steve to take that fucking bike Cal never uses down to storage, after tripping over it for the hundredth time in a row. Then I culled my books and reorganized the shelves. We have two double-rowed shelves' worth of fiction that one or the other of us wants to read, which means we really do palpably need to stop buying books. The overage went into two stacks, one to go down to the building library, the other to various friends. I have specific ideas about some of them, but I can post a list of the rest if anybody's interested.

We also re-organized our DVD sleeves, emerging with both a sleeve for stuff we want to watch or re-watch and one completely empty new sleeve, just waiting to be filled. I'm currently making my way through Oliver Stone's Alexander Revisited, the Director's Cut, and am absolutely fascinated by how much better-structured it seems. Still not a perfect film, but utterly fascinating. I really like the extended versions of various scenes, too; granted, it's been a while since I've seen the original version, but it feels as though there are a bunch of little moments and conversational fillips I don't recall being there before. As an examination of the "great man" theory of history, it's really pretty fascinating; then again, you also get Angelina Jolie as Olympias, acting her face off through a demented, Bosnian-sounding Queen Dracula accent. Great snakes!

Next on the list: I need to go around with a chair and get at the stuff on top of the bookcases, which ranges from actual garbage and knick-knacks we haven't seen in years to stuff that really should go in Cal's room--ie, stuff we put up there to keep it away from him, but what does it matter? Let him play with it until it breaks, then we'll get rid of it. My evil plan. Then surfaces, the bathroom, the kitchen floor, the hallway...vaccum. All that.

Okay, back to it...
