The Day After (Yesterday)
Jan. 8th, 2012 09:46 pmOne day after draft. I spend most of it A) sleeping, then B) cleaning/organizing, with a side-order of C) running errands—posted Dad's Christmas prezzies, finally—and D) dealing with ultra-crazypants Cal, who was basically doing that intermittent high-pitched “Yipyipyipyipyip!” thing alllll fucking day. Tomorrow I need to make phone calls, vacuum, clean the bathroom and possibly the kitchen floor, because it's utterly disgusting. I also made dinner tonight, for the first time in what feels like a million years.
How was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, you ask? Really great, from my POV. I loved Rooney Mara's version of Salander (Better than Noomi Rapace? No: Different), loved Daniel Craig's version of Blomkvist (far better, subtle and human and full of endearing frailty), and it was also great to see Fincher's overall attention to style and detail applied to the material. I'm finding it hard to be more detailed in my analysis, because I'm still pretty damn tired, but to me, it was a perfectly great addition to canon. Also, now that it's raked in the requisite over $60 million, the idea that they might greenlight The Girl Who Played With Fire U.S. without Fincher attached annoys me, but I'd probably still go see it.
I obviously knew that the soundtrack included a Nine Inch Nails and Karen O version of Led Zepplin's “Immigrant Song”, but hadn't heard it also included a How To Destroy Angels cover version of Bryan Ferry's track “Is Your Love Strong Enough?”, from Ridley Scott's Legend. This proved to be extraordinarily useful, however, since I'd downloaded the soundtrack earlier, before I saw the film, and thus ended up playing the latter track about 64 times in succession while writing the end of A Tree of Bones. Maybe you'll be able to tell, I don't know.;)
Oh, and Steve took our malfunctioning washing machine apart to find out exactly what was causing it to overflow, then put it back together, having figured out how to make it work in the interim. I still need to call the repairman, though. I'm frankly amazed at his prowess/chutzpah, considering all he did was look up the various ins and outs of that particular make of washing machine on the Internet beforehand.
I “should” probably be preparing an End-of-the-Year music post, or updating Music at Midnight, or figuring out what I'm going to do for various short stories I owe to various venues. But...I'm goddamn tired, and tomorrow the edits may come in, so I'm just going to watch a movie, I think. Because, like I said, tired.
