So, yeah...I've been in a pretty foul mood. Not entirely sure why, aside from the usual considerations. But Chapter Seven is progressing, albeit slowly, and I really don't have to give a shit about a multitude of things, if I don't want to. Indeed, I could just give away music instead!

Therefore: Here's what I've been listening to lately, with slight footnotery. Hope it works for y'all.

We begin with a bunch of songs by people who are A) related and B) geniuses. The idea of creative people commenting on each other has always fascinated me, particularly when the bonds are familial, and the interpretations of common history vary accordingly. Therefore, say hello to the McGarrigles, Loudon Wainwright III, and his singin' spawn.

“Mother, Mother”, Kate and Anna McGarrigle

“Daughter”, Loudon Wainwright III

“Bloody Motherfucking Asshole”, Martha Wainwright

“Going to a Town”, Rufus Wainwright

(Aside from the wonderful juxtaposition of "Daughter" vs. "Bloody MFA", I'm also fond of the fact that Rufus, who sounds so contemptuous of der U.S.A. here, actually has double citizenship--Canadian and American, the American through his father. Which he's now trying to extend to cover his German boyfriend.)

I also have this longstanding obsession with Anthony Perkins, for those of you who don't know. It began with Psycho, but was extended by the fact that we share both a birthday (his in 1932 rather than 1968, obviously) and a Chinese Astrological Sign (he was the Elegant Monkey, rather than the Lonely Monkey). I still remember being in a lineup at my bank the day I heard, over my Walkman headphones, that he'd died of AIDS; "Oh, you stupid bastard," I said out loud, annoying the people nearest me.

At any rate: Perkins had two sons via his marriage to Berinthia Berenson, sister of model/actress Marisa--Oz (named after his father, Osgood) and Elvis, who's a folk singer, and wrote a whole album about his parents' deaths--Berinthia went down in one of the 9-11 planes. This song isn't from that album, but it's still pretty damn good.

And now, the most depressing mash-up EVAR. From the end of Shutter Island. Man, don't watch that film unless you want to cry like a little baby. And if you can watch it and not cry like that, don't feel like you have to tell me.;)

“This Bitter Earth/On the Nature of Daylight”, Dinah Washington/Max Richter

We follow this, naturally, with some songs about livin' it up. Just to cleanse the palate, you understand.

“Good Times”, Charlie Robison

“Country Blues”. the Bad Livers
http://www.box.net/shared/7y53bgqicm
“Fujiyama Mama”, Wanda Jackson

I'm particularly fond of this last song, in which Rockabilly vixen Jackson compares herself to the damn Atom bomb. It's amazingly un-P.C., but I'm sure she really wouldn't care, either; after all, she's the kind of chick who'll drink a quart of sake/smoke dynamite/...chase it with tobaccy/and then shoot out the lights! So keep it in your pants, people.

But wait, there's more!

“Good Friend, Yr. Hunger”, Castanets
http://www.box.net/shared/vjt1jmo9sn
“Barefoot Pilgrims”, Balmorhea
http://www.box.net/shared/6ydiej85bc
“Baby Doll”, Cat Power
http://www.box.net/shared/2qv6l9a5yn
“A Pavane for the Nursey”, Carly and Lucy Simon
http://www.box.net/shared/e88o5oejal
“I and Love and You”, the Avnett Brothers
http://www.box.net/shared/algzigoizd
“Is There a Ghost”, Band of Horses
http://www.box.net/shared/t1uze1l8if

Enjoy at your leisure, or not. I'm going to do some more hammering, then watch the second half of Dead Again, in which Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh are startlingly young, thin and palpably in love. Also: Stuttering Derek Jacobi. And Andy Garcia, smoking through his tracheotomy.

Good times.;)

Utterly defining of my life, at the moment: That I've finally progressed to a point where I can feel bad about "only" writing one book at a time.

Urrrrgh. This shit ain't workin', right now. I need to take a bath.
