Up incredibly late--4:00 AM--and in the morning Cal's cough was significantly froggier, so we decided to keep him home. The hope is that he'll therefore be better in time for Surrey Place "Hallowe'en" on Friday, since it'd be a shame for him to have to miss it.

While I was up, I noodled around with creating a new homepage (on Blogger, which proved gloriously easy to set up), and am fairly happy with the result. This doesn't mean I'll be abandoning this place, necessarily, since I enjoy the community aspect of it, as well as the opportunity (however sometimes truncated, depending on subject-matter) to vent. But I'll definitely be moving all my subsequent reviews of movies, books and the like over there, formatting them far more professionally (750 to 1,000 words each, just like my defunct FearZone columns), and I'll cross-post links to each entry anyhow, for those who want to follow that material.

Eventually, I'm also looking at putting together another blog--linked to the new homepage--where I could finally start that long-vaunted serial, PayPal buttons and all. I'd be doing it Novel-in-90 style, writing every day, and posting chapters whenever I had them; probably on a specific day of the week, though. And setting up a mailing list people could subscribe to for update announcements...

Yeah, the whole writing-in-public idea hasn't exactly worked out thus far, except with fanfiction. But from my POV, the difference here is that I now know I can write a book in a year (less, actually), so long as I don't make myself crazy about it. I'd also be looking to clock 50,000 at most, then place the result and pump it out with extra, unpublished material, like David Wellington.

Which will maybe spur my first official poll (while I can still make one), in which I ask you guys to vote on which two-line pitch you'd most like to see turned into a serial. If there's too much deadlock, we'll have cage-matches: Two ideas enter, one idea leaves! It'll be kicks!

In other news, I've already gotten through half the existing manuscript of Book... while doing a search-and-replace/remove on the word "like". Next up: "as", "But:", "And:" and "then", closely followed by "such" and "some" (often as in "or some-such"). Man, it's hard to see your personal tics all laid out like that! But the fact is, once I'm through, I never care for long/too much about what I end up having to cut to make quota--indeed, I almost never seem to miss it, afterwards. It's odd.

All right, enough of this. I need food, coffee, a bath. Later.
