Yeah, so...I have to agree with marythefan on almost all points: Last night's "Movie Songs" night on American Idol was insipid at best, even though most of the hopefuls stepped up substantially--not Lil Rounds, obviously (and sadly), and not Adam Lambert, who frankly coasted through "Born to be Wild", but everybody else. The saddest part, however, was that only Kris Allen (aka who?, you'll recall) had the stones to actually choose a song that came from a movie made less than ten-to-fifteen-to-twenty years ago. What's up with that? You get friggin' Tarantino in to judge/coach, and it's all the same old bullshit: "Don't Want to Miss a Thing", "endless love", "Have You Ever (Really Reaaaaallly REEEEAAAAALLLYY) Loved a Woman", "Everything I Do (I Do it for You)", "The Rose"...Jesus! And then, glimmering at the end of the tunnel like a brief light of hope, "Falling Slowly", from Once. Which he didn't do wonderfully, no--but man, the beautiful thing was that he even tried, frankly. Given.

So: What's the problem, here? I kept turning to Steve and suggesting alternatives: Why didn't Adam do his stunning version of "Come to Me, Bend to Me", from Brigadoon (look it up)? Why didn't Allison do "Goodnight Moon", from Kill Bill 2? Why didn't Danny do "The Hands That Built America", from Gangs--or "Gimme Shelter", the returning refrain from The Departed? Why didn't 'Noop do "Back to the House that Love Built", from Desperado? Why didn't anybody remember that Johnette Napolitano covered Coldplay's "The Scientist" over the closing credits of Wicker Park? (Not Matt, please--but anybody else would have done.) Shit, I'll bet Lil could kill "At Last", which would qualify because of Cadillac Records, wouldn't it?

Ah, but everybody has to pick off a list of already-cleared songs, and maybe only songs which were specifically written FOR various films would count ("Jai Ho", here we come!). Still, given "Falling Slowly" turned up on that list, not all of them could be as shit as the ones they actually ended up picking. Right?

Man, I don't even know why this annoys me so much. Except that it really, really does.

In other news, Cal bit me today, probably because he got so damn riled up by being forced to "use his words" during JumpStart language therapy. We immediately put him down for a time out, then came back five minutes later to find him completely unconscious. Damn, but it's obviously really hard work, whatever it is he has to do inside his brain to make the right neural pathways keep firing; I salute him, and he makes me cry. All that.
