More Writing, and Death
Jun. 19th, 2007 12:15 amAlmost 1,000 more words on "Words Written Backwards". So potentially close to moving on to the next section/towards the end. I think this thing is going to be a fucking monster--not that it isn't already. Man, I really do over-write, for someone who isn't actually doing anything novel-sized.
The "Mercy Seat" notes, OTOH, are very interesting indeed. I'm really calculating a lot of the structure I'm using in terms of what might be most easy to shoot--trying to make it compartmentalized, to use the frame as an asset as well as a limitation. I'm also doing things like deliberately leaving my "main" character in a threatening situation fifteen minutes in, then suddenly switching to what seems like a completely unrelated storyline. Because I can! (Evil laugh.) Atypically, I'm not sure where I'm going overall, and frankly, I like it.
Finally: Death Note 12. How spoilery can I be in my assessment, really? Having already warned myself well in advance of where this was all going, I can safely report that the end is about as nihilistically Japanese as the beginning promised it might be. Naturally, there's more than a bit of pathos in remembering Light as he was, all flush with naive (if sociopathic) promise and determined to reshape the world at any cost. His years as Undercover Kira (constantly lying to everyone around him, always sporting a frozen smile and a sharp-ass suit, increasingly dour) haven't worn well on him, and his final moments are indeed fairly wrenching. Yet I still care about him, nevertheless, as he screams and pouts and expires with a final "Damn it!" on those pretty lips...how stupid is that? Just the unexpressed Darwinist in me, I guess.;)
Naturally, you couldn't possibly have it end like that in the U.S., so I've been trying to figure out how the transplanted version would deal with things. Probably yoink the filmic twist of having L somehow fake his own Death Note death, for one thing...
